Welcome All.

I'm using this page as a place where I can reflect on things that i believe but really dont get much of a chance to talk about or explore. I am interested in current affairs and believe that the vast majority of us do actually have something positive to contribute.
I dont like getting bogged down in any individual subjects -- since i know that some people will feel very strongly on certain things, but also because I want this site to be more reflective of life at large and not viewed through a petri dish. I have many loves and one of them is to discuss woes! ;) -- Just another moaner!
I really do hope that no-one gets upset by any comments I make, I try to make them generic and positive but sometimes the subject matter makes that difficult.
If you read something that you think is incorrect or feel that you have something to contribute then please feel free to contact me, you will usually find my address at the bottom of the page.
happy reading =)
Dot_on terrorism
Ok, im not mad, im just feel that i want to put what i believe in some kind of a public place where it can be scrutinized by millions! :( - Ok so maybee i am mad =)
It is no accident that im talking about this in the wake of the World Trade Center trajedy. This horrible inhumane attack on so many innocents has to be one of the worst attrocities of our times. But the question of response is a murky one.
I think there may be something to be said about the way in which many 'civilised' nations are so eager to provide the worst kind of retribution. I believe that the perpetrators of this crime HAVE to be held to account, but i worry about the innocents in that country. I believe that there has been enough unnecesary loss of life already. I think that there always has to be a better way to deal with such problems. Surely nothing good can come from hate and revenge - no matter how righteous.
A direct example could be the Northern Irish situation, where paramilitaries have fought the police and army presence for about 30 years. The closest that we have ever come to seeing a resolution of their issues came from a meeting that lasted for days, and ended on good Friday. There emerged a framework for an amicable all round settlement, something that many would have believed impossible.
If we want to end terrorism everywhere, and for good, then we have to fight the roots of it, the poverty and the awfull disparity between the rich and the poor (nations as well as people). You can kill a disease but unless you remove the causes it will only reappear.
Dot_on "the big issue"
Homeless. beggars. poverty line. All too common today -- even for those of us who are immensely lucky enough to have been born into the dubious prosperity and security of a "first world" country. I dont believe that this is a neccesary evil as many would have us believe. I just dont accept that "the homeless will always be with us".
I think that the amount of people sleeping on the street should be the gauge by which we measure the heart of a nation. Sadly then it looks like most nations are heartless.
It seems that it is a common thread in all "developed" nations that the weak and the unlucky are disregarded entirely. The treatment of the elderly never ceases to shock me! And no matter how many times i see someone begging, i cant help but feel guilty. But for what? Probably for not doing enough. Is it the responsability of government? Or is it our responsability? Are we really loving our neighbour? I think that most of you will agree that we dont even know our neighbours names -- i know that i certaintly dont.
My own personal belief is that no-one is a county should be allowed to make ANY profit until every single member of that nation has their most BASIC needs met. Im not asking for fluffed pillows and servants for everyone, but i think that every person everywhere is due some level of basic living standards. Everyone should be allowed dignity! It doesnt cost that much.
The big issue is a magazine made and sold by the homeless in the UK (and possibly elsewhere, i dont know), has great interviews with "A" list stars, and only costs a quid! It has been a great success to date and i think that it is one of the cost constructive and positive movements towards a resolution of this issue. Homeless people can earn money from the sale of a magazine that they have a direct influence on. I know that no one should be "in the gutter" in the first place, but this really does help get many back on their feet.
